Exploring the use of diacritics by reducing the complexity of Jawi Spelling
Jawi has been part of the Malay peninsula since 700 years ago. It's writing system stems from the Arabic alphabet that has been modified and tweaked over the years to accommodate the current Malay language. It is part of the original script of Bahasa Melayu.
As English becomes a universal language that dominates the world. Mark Warschauer, a professor of education and information at the University of California, Irvine believes that the English language has invaded workplaces and the global economy. However, the English language no longer belongs to the natives speakers but instead is being
shared globally.
Dispelling Ignorance on Jawi
The Malay language of today is generally written using the Latin script or as Rumi as it is called. Jawi, on the other hand, is widely used in religious schools. Unlike Mandarin or Tamil, the Malay language has no original alphabet of its own. Derived from Arabic influence and in the local context is much older than the romanised version, Jawi was considered a key factor in the advent of Malay as the lingua franca of the Malay archipelago.
It is a traditional symbol of Malay culture and civilization. Though it has roots from the Arabic language, it has become more localized and an intrinsic part of the Malay language. No doubt that Arabic is the language of the Quran but the language is spoken and understood by almost all non-Muslims in the lingua franca region.
For certain, a non-Muslim learning to read or write in Jawi will not make them a Malay or religious. Currently, Jawi is visibly declining in the Malay community with non-Muslims thinking that Jawi is specifically for learning religious subjects. Misconceptions must be corrected in order to understand that Jawi is merely a variant of Arabic script and used to write Malay language.
Although, the usage of Jawi is mainly for "Islamic purposes" such as mosques and Islamic schools. However, there are a few non-Malay Muslim enthusiasts. Being proficient in Arabic does not mean being proficient in the Jawi script either. In order to dispel the assumption of what Jawi is, this online based learning will be teaching on reducing the complexity by applying diacritics to these letterforms.

Jawi orthography is far from standard, particularly in handwritten documents. Nevertheless, for the purposes of cataloging, it is essential to standardize the romanized form of every basic lexical unit of a language. Two widely accepted standards for writing Malay in the Latin script exist: the Indonesian and the Malaysian.
However, there is dispute on the standards of writing Jawi. One of it being originated from Za`ba`s spelling system as it`s basis. Although it has been tuned from time to time.
Applying diacritics on Jawi
The reason for this application of diacritics is to accommodate the current spellings of the Malay language. They are known to create stress in order to emphasize certain words, By applying both Arabic and Latin on Jawi. This study aims to achieve a clear form of clarity whereby diacritics could be used as guide to teaching the Malay community and enthusiasts in writing and reading Jawi.

Purpose of The Jawi kit
The importance of leaning Jawi spelling system is of importance before the Jawi text itself could be written. With many Jawi classes being taught in workshops and or religious schools in Singapore. This project aims to not only be a source of guidance but also providing extended help beyond these workshops.
The objective of this is to easy learning towards the masses. More specifically those entering tertiary schools and working adults between the ages of 18 - 35. Where studying Jawi could be easily accessible online. Moreover, it is a way to introduce a system whereby guides or diacritical marks should be placed onto the alphabets. In order to also promote self learning. This Jawi kit will provide users the basics of learning Jawi.
